4 Of The Most Unique Truck Stops In America
- Apr 25, 2018
While trucking across the United States, you’ll find a number of rest spots along the journey. While many are nice but nothing to write home about, there are those select few that stand out in a crowded highway or stand the test of time. Here are some of the most unique Truck Stops in America for drivers hauling freight, and other travelers on the road.
If you ever drive through South Carolina on I-95, you can’t miss the signs for this kitschy oasis. With six different restaurants, ranging from casual dining (like the Truckstop Diner) to a steakhouse, plus shops, an amusement park, and the largest indoor reptile exhibit in the country; it’s truly a unique rest stop. There’s also a campground and an Inn for weary travelers looking for a place to sleep. South of the Border was established in 1949 and is one of those must-see American landmarks. If you’re on a deadline and can’t afford to stop, at least wave to Pedro as you pass by!
While travelling on I-80, you may just come across a Sapp Bros. Travel Center, and if you do, consider yourself lucky. This friendly, full-service rest stop has 16 locations between Salt Lake City, Utah and Clearfield, Pennsylvania. Six of these locations feature their famous Apple Barrel restaurants, serving up reasonably priced hot coffee and “home-cooked” American cuisine. Sapp Bros. also provides 24-hour roadside service, and “Mom-Approved” clean restrooms, for drivers in need.
Located in Portland Oregon, Jubitz has been called “The World’s Classiest Truck Stop.” More like a little city than a typical Truck Stop, you’ll find a hotel, a deli and convenience store, a full-service restaurant open 24-hours a day, fuel and maintenance services, a movie theater, and a cool lounge with live entertainment featured nightly.
Known as the “World’s Largest Truck Stop,” you’ll find everything from a movie theatre to a museum dedicated to trucking at Iowa 80. There is also a massive store covered in chrome accessories, that features three tractor-trailers inside, and a restaurant with a legendary 50-foot long salad bar. Located on the eastern edge of Iowa, not far from the Mississippi River, the Iowa 80 Truck Stop has been welcoming drivers since 1964. Some even say it’s like a Disneyland for truckers. If you happen to be headed that way, it’s one stop that’s not to be missed.
